Dollface: The Awakening by R.J. Powell

There are moments where I think self-proclaimed “extreme horror” novels are actually splatterpunk. Maybe I read too much into the story. But between the kids being turned into dolls and the men – the doll that becomes awakened recognizes as all complicit around her – buying them and supplying children for them, well there is just so much symbolism. There is even a reference to S.E. Hinton’s “The Outsiders” (known for its socioeconomic commentary of masculinity, violence, and class) in this book!

This is definatly cringe-worthy, well executed little book. There is a hint of supernatural evil mixed with the reanimation of dolls that adds to the intrigue of the story. As he “makes” the doll and she becomes aware during his disgusting acts, the reader finds themselves waiting for her to make her move and surprise him with her own vile revenge. This was a five star read and I can’t wait to read the rest of the series.
